“Coaching runners outside and inside the fence“
Timing of periodization was well introduced by professor Per Olof Astrand in 1978, in the fabulous "Textbook of Work Physiology" . It is not easy to stimate what is the time needed to increase the Vo2max, Vo2 related to Ventilatory Threshold, improve the aerobic threshold, as a base for the specific work,... but, We will be more than agree that if US or Canadian Trials were celebrated too far from the Olympic Games, but not far enough to increase the main performance factors of any event, there would be an impaired on the athletes performance, due to the timing of periodization would not be respected.
Are rules invented or Do We must to invent rules?
I am totally agree than in several disciplines (all track and field events), the standard to be achieved by the athlete for attending to the big event (World, Olympics,...), could be achieved the season before it, and just support the participation with a good performance condition, no less than 25 weeks before the event, unless trials so close to the event.
Periodization of timing means a deep understanding of exercise physiology and a respect to the basic standards developed by researchers for so many years.
In the Spanish team is a nonsense having in track and field team (paralympic team) a period to get the standard from January 1St to June 20Th, due to athletes who peak by June, won´t have enough time to develope the specific qualities for the Games (Beginning os September).
It´s time to work respecting the basic principles of training theory, well defined almost forty years ago.
Training and racing is something very serious, it just all about science.
